The Venture Scholars School-to-Career Scholarships recognize talented students who plan to complete a career-focused program in a community college or training institute, with the goal of obtaining employment in their chosen field upon graduation.
The scholarship provides up to $5,000 to qualified seniors from participating area high schools in Portland, Oregon. The high schools review applications, select the scholarship winners, and disburse the scholarship funds in equal installments over each student's course of study (typically two years). The program has awarded over 100 scholarships in the last eight years (2005 - 2012). Careers being pursued by the recipients include nursing, dental hygienst, emergency medical technician, teaching assistant, machinist, graphics design, and multimedia, among others. The students are attending Portland, Mt. Hood, Clackamas, and Clark Community Colleges; the Art Institutes of Seattle and Portland, and the Concorde Career Institute.
The program began in 2004, in order to give students with a focused career goal the opportunity to achieve their potential. The program is funded by several Portland area philanthropists who believe strongly in honoring and supporting students who pursue careers that can be advanced through a community college or technical training program. Additional funds are being solicited so that the program may be expanded to more students and more high schools. Donations of $500 or greater will be gratefully accepted.
