Home | Success Stories | Eligibility | Career Choices | How to Apply | About Us | For Venture ScholarsThe Venture Scholars Scholarship Program began in 2004, in order to give students with a focused career goal the opportunity to achieve their potential. The scholarships are funded by several Portland area philanthropists who believe strongly in honoring and supporting students who pursue careers that can be advanced through a community college or a technical training program.
The Venture Scholars program is modeled on the Grove Scholars program of California. Grove Scholars was started in 1998 by the family foundation of former Intel Chairman Andrew S. Grove. Hundreds of California award recipients are now trained and working in such jobs as computer technician, automotive technician, nurse, chef, dental assistant and preschool teacher.
From 2006 through 2011 the Venture Scholars program has awarded over 80 scholarships to graduating seniors at participating high schools in Portland, Oregon. Additional funds are being solicited so that the program may be expanded to more students and more high schools.
The program is administered by Social Venture Partners Portland (SVPP, www.svpportland.org). SVPP is a group of Portland area philanthropists that pool their funds and talents to support local not-for-profit organizations. Several of the donors to the Venture Scholars program are members of SVPP.
